In 2003, when Carol and her husband, Tom Jenks, founded the nonprofit Narrative, their idea was simple yet revolutionary: to create a new kind of free library—a global meeting place—an ever-expanding oasis of excellent and diverse reading, without borders or walls, inside of which readers of all ages could get deliriously, entertainingly, profoundly lost. And found.

Today as Narrative celebrates twenty years of publishing, it is one of the most widely read digital sources of fiction, poetry, essays, and art. Narrative publishes and pays hundreds of writers and artists each year, including many celebrated authors of the day, and a third who are emerging. The Narrative Prize for best new writer published in the magazine is awarded annually and has marked the start of many notable careers. Narrative’s entire library of thousands of stories, poems, essays, and art is always available, and always free.

In 2014 Carol launched Narrative For Schools to help address the needs of teachers and students in underserved communities around the world who seek access to quality literature but are too often hampered by limited resources. Narrative For Schools provides classrooms with the free Narrative library, writing tools, lesson plans, and video tutorials, in addition to the annual Narrative High School Writing Contest, with winners selected, edited, and mentored by Carol. Today, Narrative in the Schools serves more than 120,000 students and teachers in 37 countries and throughout the US.
